In nearly every modern refrigerator, there’s only one set of cooling coils, and they live in the freezer. A small fan, the evaporator fan, blows cold air off those coils and pushes some of it through a duct into the fresh food section. A damper controls how much gets through. Your fridge doesn’t make its own cold, it borrows cold air from the freezer.
Far and away what we find most in Tampa homes. When the fan motor dies, the coils still freeze (freezer stays cold) but nothing pushes that air to the fresh food section. Easy test: open the freezer and listen for a soft hum. Press the door switch in if needed. Dead silence or loud grinding points right at the motor. If the fan runs fine, pull the rear panel inside the freezer and look at the coils. They should show light frost on clear metal.
