A dryer that takes forever to dry is a different animal from one that won’t heat at all. Here the dryer is getting hot — you can feel it — but you’re running loads twice, sometimes three times, and the towels still come out clammy. Most people blame the heating element. Nine times out of ten it’s fine. The heat is being made; it just isn’t moving. And in Tampa Bay, our humidity quietly makes the whole problem worse. Here’s every spot the airflow gets choked, in the order a tech actually checks them.
A dryer dries by pushing hot air through the clothes and carrying moisture out of the house — not by heat alone. When it heats but won’t dry, the cause is almost always restricted airflow: a lint screen sealed with an invisible softener film, a lint-packed or kinked vent, a blocked exterior flap, or a moisture sensor coated with residue that shuts the cycle off early.

Picture the path the air takes. Room air is pulled in, heated, and blown into the drum. It passes through your tumbling clothes, picks up moisture, then exits through the lint screen, down a hose, through the wall duct, and out the exterior flap on the side of your house. Behind the dryer, a duct carries hot, wet air outside. Over time it packs with lint, and the longer and twistier the run, the worse it gets. Classic signs of a clogged vent: long dry times, a laundry room that turns into a sauna, and a musty or burning smell. Two quick checks, no tools:
Run the dryer a few minutes, then go outside to the vent flap and feel the air. It should be a strong, warm gust. Weak or barely-there means a restriction somewhere in the run.
The louvers should open with the airflow and fall shut when it stops. I’ve found bird nests, softener-glued lint mats, and (in Tampa) flaps caked with pollen and gunk holding them half-closed.
To clear it: unplug the dryer, pull it out, disconnect the hose, and run a vent-brush kit through the whole run to the outside. If you run “Auto Dry” or “Sensor Dry” instead of a timed cycle, the dryer isn’t guessing — it’s reading. Two metal strips inside the drum (the moisture sensor) detect dampness as the clothes tumble across them. When the clothes stop completing that circuit, the dryer decides they’re dry and shuts off. The catch: fabric softener and dryer-sheet residue coat those strips. Coated strips can’t read moisture correctly, so the dryer thinks the load is dry while it’s still damp — and cuts the cycle short. Your clothes aren’t being under-dried by a weak machine; they’re being stopped early by a fooled sensor.
The 30-second fix: open the door, find the two curved metal bars (usually low on the front inside the drum), and wipe them with a cotton ball dampened in rubbing alcohol. If your dry times have crept up and you’re a softener user, this is a prime suspect.
A dryer needs room to tumble. Clothes have to lift, fall, and let air pass between them. Cram the drum and they sit in a wet clump while hot air just slides around the outside.
