The question we get asked constantly: “Is this worth fixing, or should I just replace it?” The honest answer depends on how old the appliance is and what the repair costs. Here are the real average lifespans β€” based on industry data and what we see in the field every day in Tampa Bay.

Refrigerator: 10-15 Years

A well-maintained refrigerator lasts 12-15 years on average. French door models trend toward the lower end (10-12 years) because of their more complex ice makers and water dispensers. Basic top-freezer models often last 15+ years. Compact and mini-fridges typically last 8-10 years.

Repair or replace? Under 8 years old and the repair is under 50% of replacement cost β€” repair. Over 12 years old and the compressor is failing β€” replace. In between, we’ll give you an honest cost comparison on-site.

Florida factor: Tampa Bay’s heat makes compressors work harder than in cooler climates. We see more compressor failures here than the national average suggests.

Washing Machine: 10-14 Years

Top-loaders tend to last slightly longer than front-loaders β€” the simpler mechanical design means fewer failure points. Front-loaders average 10-12 years; top-loaders average 12-14. Speed Queen machines routinely hit 20+ years because they’re built to commercial standards.

Repair or replace? Under 7 years old β€” repair almost anything. 7-10 years β€” repair if under $300. Over 10 years and needing a major repair β€” consider replacement, especially if the machine is a builder-grade model.

Note on bearings: Drum bearing failure on a front-loader under warranty age (under 7 years) is always worth repairing. It’s a significant job but leaves you with a machine that should run another 5-8 years.

Dryer: 10-13 Years

Dryers are simpler machines than washers β€” fewer moving parts, less water exposure β€” and they show it in their lifespan. Electric dryers average 13 years; gas dryers average 13 years as well. The most common failure is the heating element or thermal fuse β€” inexpensive parts that are almost always worth replacing.

Repair or replace? Dryers are almost always worth repairing unless the drum itself is damaged or the machine is over 12 years old and needs multiple repairs simultaneously. A $150 heating element repair on a 6-year-old dryer is a no-brainer.

Maintenance note: Clean the dryer vent every 1-2 years. Lint buildup is the #1 cause of dryer failure and a genuine fire hazard. This single maintenance step adds years to a dryer’s life.

Oven/Range: 13-17 Years

Ranges last a long time. A well-maintained range β€” gas or electric β€” commonly runs 15 years or more. Freestanding ranges outperform built-in wall ovens in longevity, mainly because they’re easier to service and have better-established parts availability.

Repair or replace? Ranges are almost always worth repairing. Even at 12 years old, a bake element replacement or igniter swap is cheap relative to a new range. The exception: if the control board fails on a low-end range over 12 years old, the repair cost may approach the replacement cost.

When to be cautious: Gas ranges with gas valve or manifold problems should always be assessed by a professional. Don’t DIY gas appliance repairs.

Dishwasher: 9-12 Years

Dishwashers have a shorter average lifespan than other major appliances β€” the combination of water, heat, and detergent takes a toll. Budget models average 9-10 years; premium brands like Bosch and Miele regularly exceed 12-15 years.

Repair or replace? Brand matters a lot here. A Bosch at year 8 is worth repairing; a builder-grade unit at year 9 probably isn’t. We see Bosch 500-series units that customers keep repairing well past the 12-year mark because parts are available and the machine fundamentally works.

When leaks matter: A dishwasher that’s leaking and over 10 years old β€” think hard about replacement. Repeated water damage to your kitchen floor adds up fast.

Ice Maker (Built-In): 5-10 Years

The ice maker is consistently the first thing to fail in a modern refrigerator. Expect the first ice maker issue around years 5-8. This is not a reason to replace the refrigerator β€” it’s a reason to repair or replace the ice maker unit within the refrigerator. Standalone undercounter ice machines last 10-15 years with proper maintenance.

Repair or replace? Ice makers are almost always worth repairing. The ice maker assembly itself is a component within the refrigerator β€” replacing it extends the refrigerator’s life significantly at moderate cost.

The Rule That Actually Works

Forget the appliance age alone β€” it’s not the right measure. Use this instead: if the repair cost is under 50% of the cost to replace the appliance with a comparable model, repair. If it’s over 50% and the appliance is in the second half of its expected lifespan, replace.

When we quote a repair at your home, we’ll tell you exactly how that math works out. We turn down repair jobs when replacement makes more sense for the customer β€” it’s not our job to maximize repair revenue, it’s our job to give you the right answer.
